The Butterfly Valley closed from 1 November in the operator's 2024 announcement.

Storms can close sites at short notice. On 14 October 2026 the acropolis of Lindos, ancient Kamiros, Ialysos, the Archaeological Museum and the palace closed from 12:30 because of a weather warning. The notice applied to that day only. Check the day before you travel.

Heat and fire safety in summer

Short rules that apply to every visitor.

Dry summers raise the risk of forest fires. Do not light open fires in forests or near dry vegetation, and do not throw away lit cigarettes. Respect closure signs when the danger is high, and follow the evacuation routes set by the authorities. The municipality reported fire danger level 5 for 29 August 2026. If you see smoke or fire, call 199 or 112.

In July 2023 wildfires led to precautionary evacuations in several places on the island, including Kiotari, Gennadi, Lardos and Lindos. Evacuated does not mean destroyed. If you book on the southeast coast, ask the property about its current state.

On hot days carry water, wear a hat and sunscreen, and keep the middle of the day for the shade or the sea. Check the opening hours of sites, and plan long walks for the morning.
